The <\/span>Penna<\/span><\/b> bastion<\/span><\/b>, also known as San Sebastiano one, was the <\/span>first<\/span><\/b> to be built during the construction of the <\/span>pentagonal<\/span><\/b> fortification<\/span><\/b> made by the duke <\/span>Guidobaldo<\/span><\/b> II<\/span><\/b> della<\/span><\/b> Rovere<\/span><\/b> in 1546.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fortification, that was already thought by <\/span>Francesco Maria I<\/span><\/b>, father of <\/span>Guidobaldo II<\/span><\/b>, is the result of careful studies carried out by the most famous<\/span> military architects<\/span><\/b> of the era. The political-religious strategy saw the need to equip the cities, especially the ones near the seaside, with a <\/span>new defensive apparatus<\/span><\/b>, ready to against the Turkish invasions that constantly threatened the Adriatic coast;in this light it was therefore logical that the Duke should begin his fortification on the side from which the greatest dangers came, that was from the <\/span>sea<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to the earthquake of 1930 were implemented some interventions that gradually erased the character of the walled village.<\/span>
